Snow continues in our forecast. We’ve had from four to five feet of snow so far on the western end and Lake Gogebic area-more in some places, less in others. After a long spell of single digits, a mild weekend will be welcome, then back to the wintery teens on Monday.

Gogebic Range Trail Authority Groomers, on the far western end, and Gogebic Area Groomers in the Lake Gogebic Area are all out doing their thing. We’re getting a lot of good reports from riders. Trails 2 and 8 are groomed and good although you’ll still find a few wet spots. Trails 11N- 11S and 160 will open Monday, December 15th.

Lake Gogebic groomers report Trails 13 N, 102, 1 North of Bergland, 8E and 8W are alll in good condition.

Trail 8 just north of Bergland has been re-routed…it is being brushed, signed and groomed, Please watch for workers in that area.

Watersmeet will let us know when they can get their groomers out on trails.

PLEASE NOTE THIS: THERE IS NO LONGER A GAS STATION IN SILVER CITY. AT THE TIME OUR MAP WAS PRINTED, OUR INFORMATION HAD A GAS ICON THERE. THAT STORE/STATION IS NO LONGER OPEN. PLAN ACCORDINGLY.
SHOULD YOU RUN IN TO AN EMERGENCY AND HAVE A CELL PHONE, YOU MAY CALL 906-885-5246 AND EMERGENCY SERVICE WILL BE AVAILABLE IN THE SILVER CITY AREA.

I guess that to receive the credit loans from banks you ought to present a firm motivation. However, once I have got a financial loan, because I was willing to buy a house.

pantera
surgin,
Sounds like they took the 13 loop from Greenland to Twin Lakes. That was a nice run as I indicated in my post. Hope they had fun. South/South-West of Mass City was horrible, well except for 13 west of Norwich Road to Bergland which was pretty decent.

Hope you rotator cuff heals fast and for sure so you are ready for next season.

We were thinking about heading up this weekend again but trailer up from the house in Wakefield to Houghton and ride in the keweenaw but it sounds like it got realy warm up there too.

Need to find out info on trail conditions.

I haven't taken odometer readings yet on the machines to see how this season racked up but I'm thinking it will by shy of 2K.

we were up there Sat.. and feared the trails you took, so trailered up to Mass city... I can't ride thanks to what the deer did to my rotator cuff, so I dropped three sleds and three friends at trail head of Bill Nichols and told them I would meet them at twin lakes in an hour..(38 miles).. they showed up 2.4 hours later!!!
They said there were no bare spots and they had a great time and hit no deer!!

drove the sleds and trailer there via ewen and bruce crossing and that section of 8, and 3 from them up to rockland is also looking real bad...

good year, 2000 + miles on my Z1 and the boys at Northwoods arctic cat in hurley got it repaired in less that two weeks and they even preserved my trail and state stickers and numbers... thanks guys...

Ride Report from yesterdays run of 200 miles with the kids: Keep in mind it was close to 50 degrees out!!

Wakefield to the Tula Tracks (M28) on 8: Very thin with places you HAD to drive across wet, sloppy dirt.
Tula Tracks(M28) to Bergland on 8: Also very thin but able to weave back & forth around the bare spots.
Around Bergland on 1 & 8 thin on west side better once into it but wet & sloppy.
Bergland to Rockland on #13:
Pretty decent up to Norwich Road where the GRTA turns around.
East of Norwich road: Rough & Rougher, obviously not groomed as recent as West of Norwich Road. This is Superior Snowmobile Clubs stretch and is usually in poorer condition.
Coming into Rockland: Poor, poor & horrible. Snirt, dirt, mud & water. Do not got this way if you value your sled. This area is done for the season unless the temps drop & they get significant snow.
Rockland to Mass City on #3: Poor, rough, sloppy & rough. Not groomed in a long time. East of #12 intersection was better but not by much.
Mass City to Twin Lakes on #13: Good, plenty of snow although it was wet & slushy in places. A fun ride and a real treat after what we just went through.
Twin Lakes back to Greenland on the #13 loop: Very nice, plenty of snow, not much traffic and snirt only in some corners.
Greenland to Onotonagon on #12: Also very good and we wasted no time getting there.
Ontonagon to White Pine on #12: Also very nice and also cruised right along. West of the 101 intersection was significantly worse but only because East of there was beautiful. Still ok but had to slow down quite a bit.
White Pine to Bergland on #1 was fine too. Cruised right along as things were refreezing and we wanted to get back home.
Bergland back to Wakefield: Same as in the morning but a little worse of course due to the warm temps throughout the day.

My recomendations: Ride North/East of Mass City, around Ontonagon etc. South Boundary, aka #11 should be fine too.

Pantera

pantera
Surgin,
Did you hit the deer East or West of where 13 goes South off of #2? We had 2 DNR officers at the intersection of where 13 goes North from #2 and was wondering after hearing about your incident if they were down there for that. But I seem to recall some sleds also sitting by where #13 comes up from the south when we came up from WI. I was leading a group of Vintage machines on my '79 Eltigre Cross Country race sled.

We too are planning on coming up this weekend with the family but not liking the forecast.

P.S. Don't get me wrong, I like to drive fast too, when conditions allow and I certainly don't want speed limits like MN has, 50 mph, day or night. Doesn't allow you to ride like you should be able to.

There is a lot of snow up there so lets hope the warm up doesn't totally ruin it up there.

Pantera

surgin
Pantera,
... soon after I hit the deer I waited for a group of the Ride of Champs to turn onto 2 after coming up out of WI... may be you were the lead sled.. I was the Z! held together by tape..

Got five guys coming up this weekend, tho I fear that I won't be riding thanks to the deer... 40 degree forecast on friday does not bode well. sorry you keep having near misses with the fast boys... after the deer encounter going to keep the speed down when temps are warm.... and even when they are not...

03/01/10

Due to the high volume of traffic on the trails we ran logging roads on Saturday. Lots of snow and nobody in our way. Did a little over 100 miles.

Forgot to mention on friday we found 3 sleds out of gas that didn't make it down from South boundary to Bergland. We had 2-5 gal cans on-board for the long day so we gassed them up and sent them on their way.

Later up 13 towards Rockland we found a guy stuck turning around to help his buddys out and gave him a little assistance. He was buried right next to the edge of the trail.

Might head back up this weekend with the kids for another run...

Trail Report:
We ran from Wakefield to Houghton/Hancock and back for about a 250 mile run.

The trails in the morning were decent, plenty of traffic on them from their last grooming, but not bad. Thoughout the day in into the evening we came upon several groomers so while we didn't have any problems since we weren't trying to break the sound barrier, some of the clowns out there better keep that in mind so they don't crash into them and take the groomer out for the rest of us.

On that same note: PASSING AROUND CORNERS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE!!!! Some idiots pulled that on us and after 1 got thru we made sure for our safety and theirs that the rest had to wait until the trail straightened out and we pulled over to allow them to pass. We just about had one of our group pushed off the trail from that idiot maneuver.

Again, I feel like I am shouting down a well because those idiots probably don't read this board or even know how to read but I will say it again to at least let the people know that do read this to watch out for these idiots.

We got in late last night and are heading out the door this morning to go riding. Father-in-law ran his sled thru the front yard and there is plenty of fresh powder, 1 - 2 feet since our last visit.

Will let you know trail condidtions tonight when we get back.

Pantera

pantera
surgin,
sorry to hear about the deer, oooouuuch.... We were near there last week but didn't hear anything about it. We were on a run for the Snowmobile Hall of Fame, the 'Ride with the Champs' on Vintage machines, Code named 'Vintage Challenge". We ran all the way from St. Germain, WI to the Fish Tales on Lake Gogebic for lunch, 2nd year of the run and we made it both times. Ran a 1979 El Tigre 6000 Cross Country edition race sled. We too saw lots of deer, 4- legged and motorized, lots of Deere boys on the run, i towed 3 of them out of the woods.

We are heading up this weekend, tonight actually, so it sounds like they just got some fresh snow so conditions should be awesome!!

Later,
Pantera

K2skier37,
It may be a long shot but worth trying. I found a cell phone on the edge of the trail on a bridge over a rivine with about a 100' drop once. Keyboard was locked so we couldn't call anyone using recent calls to get a clue as to who's it was but with the S/N we were able to trace it back to the owner & I sent it to him in Indiana, i think. The owner was very greatful.

Hopefully if found they check this site.

trail conditions last weekend quite good even with snow soft where it was brown.. lots of people up there..

I was the one that hit the doe on 2 between marinesco and watersmeet.. I was doing 50.. and was lucky that she did not go over my hood.. lots of plastic to replace on my Z1... but no engine or chasis damage...

You groomers are doing a great job.. and heard you are getting more snow.. go go go..

surgin
where do you mean north of bessemer?? on trail 11 north?? north of Indianhead??

K2skier37
Hey everyone i know this is a far fetched idea, although i figured i would come here in hopes that some one may have found a camera. We had stopped at a location just north of Bessemer and my camera had fallen out of my pocket upon leaving. Unfortunately i was not aware of this until ways down the trail. It was a silver olympus stylus. If anyone has found this and or knows some one that did would you email me with info please? Fahey37@gmail.com and i do have money that i could send your way.

surgin
As Promised, made it up here Saturday Feb 5th….
Not as much new snow as the weather was indicating, much was lost during rainy weekend… but once again the groomers have done an incredible job… Bessemer to Wakefield and then 11 south all the way into WI was smooth and pristine. WI trails were as I remember them over a decade ago. Too many driveways, too many signs to resorts, and too many people coming the other way. Had to wait for a dogsled race to pass to get from land=o=lakes back into MI on 3. Very bumpy all the way to Watersmeet, then 2 West to to 13 N was pretty smooth. (Cops were checking stickers there.) 13 N and 100 to Lake Gogebic had icy corners and a few dirt spots on the logging roads. To avoid the risky corners we hopped on the lake and took a straight route to hoop and holler for gas and refreshments. 8 and 2 back to Bessemer were holding up pretty well, some ice in the corners but not as bad as by the lake. Overall, not bad for a Saturday, and still prefer MI trails to those in WI, but with sticker on the hood will try a few more times this season.

Here is an article from today’s (1-27-10)Ironwood Daily Globe:

Names of the three men, ages 46, 47 and 18, had not been released Tuesday afternoon.
They were snowmobiling on Lake Gogebic at the mouth of Snow River when their sleds went through the ice. They were too far out into the river for foot rescue, onlookers said.

Read the above and you’ll see why we say there is no such thing as "safe ice". If you choose to go out, be sure you talk to locals where you intend to ride for specific information about the ice depth and other factors…be aware you will be riding at your own risk.

Western U.P. Trail Report - Western U.P. Bureau - 01/26

It’s a Winter Wonderland of fresh snow…however, we’re going to hold off on our Big Snow Country official Season Snowfall to date until tomorrow as totals are not available yet. Just a guestimate about the new snow is anywhere from 6 to 10" at this point…however, Watersmeet had just a couple of inches.
Gogebic Range Trail Authority: After the groomers were pulled from the trails due to mild weekend temps, they are now back out both day and night. All trails being groomed including 2-8-160-11N and 11S. Conditions are good and getting better.
From the Lake Gogebic Area-Groomers are all out double grooming all trails.. and reporting trails range from fair to good to very good.
Watersmeet groomers are back out and reporting trail conditions are fair to good.
IN ALL AREAS:
You need to be aware the groomers are out both day and night, so watch for them, and PLEASE pull over or at least slow down and wait for the operator to signal you by whenever you see them.
The time you spend riding in Big Snow Country is all about lots of fun and a great time…therefore, your safety is our #1 priority.

ABOUT THE ICE:
It’s time for our usual caution. There is no such thing as "safe ice" due to underwater currents. If you choose to go out, be sure you talk to locals where you intend to ride for specific information about the ice depth and other factors…be aware you will be riding at your own risk.

Ontonagon Trail Report - Scott’s Superior Inn - 01/26

We are back to grooming, and surprisingly the trails held up very good, there are some water holes, but they should freeze up this week . getting around towns is still a little rough, but for the most part the trails are pretty good.

Scott’s Superior Inn and Cabins , why not stay where the groomer lives. CHECK OUT OUR LODGING SPECIAL!!

I will keep my eyes open.. if you see a z1 non turbo.. let me know...

surgin,
I couldn't pull up that page but from the description that looks like it except that that is the Trail (solo) machine not the 2-up.

We haven't bought any machines from them but have gotten certain gear for the kids and a part or 2.

Mother nature needs to turn on the snow machine up there. We'll be back up later in February...

Western U.P. Trail Report - Western U.P. Bureau - 01/18

Big Snow Country official Season Snowfall to date: 113.7".

We are in need of more snow…know it will come…but the sooner the better…mild temps and traffic took a toll on the trails but all groomers are out in all areas working to get them back in good condition. Overall they held up in pretty good shape.

Gogebic Range Trail Authority: Expect to find an occasional bare spot…groomer working to fix them. 11 N being groomed…on 11S you still want to watch for Logging Trucks around that quarter-mile narrow stretch -remember, the Trucks have the Right of Way. Signs are posted in that area…the Trail is being groomed. Trails 2-8 and 160 are all in the process of being groomed.

From the Lake Gogebic Area-everything is being groomed and in pretty good shape tho trails will deteriorate as you get closer to the WI line.. IMPORTANT: There are Logging Trucks in the vicinity of the junction of 102 AND 8-W. You MAY NOT ride plowed roads-you MUST observe the snowmobile trail signs. (Have heard they may be issuing tickets.) Stay on the trails and if you see a logging truck, pull over immediately.

Watersmeet groomers report all trails groomed and conditions are fair to good
IN ALL AREAS:
After a number of close calls, you need to be aware groomers can be out any time of the day or night, so PLEASE pull over or at least slow down and wait for the operator to signal you by whenever you see them.
We want you to have lots of fun and a great time…therefore, your safety is our #1 priority.

THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW
MAP ERROR
There are errors regarding the location of Paulding, MI, which is a new advertiser on this year’s Trail Map. The red dot (#85)was mistakenly placed 1/2" south of where it should be and there also should be a GAS icon at Paulding. Snowmobile access to Paulding is via plowed County Rd-shoulders only.
ABOUT THE ICE:
It’s time for our usual caution. There is no such thing as "safe ice" due to underwater currents. If you choose to go out, be sure you talk to locals where you intend to ride for specific information about the ice depth and other factors…be aware you will be riding at your own risk.

pantera..
sounds like a good day... I guess we expect 13 to go bad on weekends with all those heading to Hancock..
agreed.. the trail condition reports I make are NOT to be critical of the groomers... if not for them MI would never see me.. just hoping that they might use the info we and perhaps others might post when they are deciding where to groom..

I have often wanted to tip them.. haven't for fear scolding.. but given you example I will if they are stopped and we are in a safe area.. thanks.. if they don't get snow up there I probable won't be back for a couple weeks.. unless my pantera gets a new life and needs to be picked up and ridden home...

good sledding all....

Trail Report:

I guess I'll start out by saying that since there hasn't been an 'official' update since the 15th that usually isn't a good sign. And YES I know the weather has been on the warm side and has been melting the base away.

Here was the route:
Wakefield to Bergland on #8 then to Rockland on #13, then #3 to Mass City, had lunch at Grandma Myrt's again, then #12 to Ontonogon to #101 back to #13 to run back into Bergland and #8 back in to Wakefield.

Now before the groomer operators get mad at me for what I post, I am going to tell it like it is, I do appreciate what you guys do, believe me but for a 3 day holiday weekend, everyone in our group was dissapointed at the condition of most of the trails we ran today. We expected the snirt and dirt near towns and road crossings but some areas had not been groomed in days and made for a very painful day of riding. Even the guys riding solo at the bars had nothing good to say about the trails we were on as well so it's not just me.

Heres the low-down:
#8 was decent to Bergland except the section where you run down the 'plowed' road otherwise it was ok, just ok.
#8/#1 along the north side of Merriweather/Bergland was nothing but chop, very annoying and very slow going.
#13 out of Bergland was decent, looked like it was groomed last night, but maybe only 1 side, a bit rough in places and the corners were mogul city.
#13 on the east side of Norwich Rd where the Superior Snowmobile club grooms was as bad as bad gets. Even the hot doggers couldn't keep up the pace. Very painful and slow getting to Rockland.
#3 around to Grandma's in Mass City was more of the same, absolutey beyond ridable. The thoughts of 'Minimum maintence Road-Travel at your own Risk' was running thru my mind the entire short distance/long travel time run. It felt like it took an hour to get from Henry's to Grandma's, and I'm probably not off by much. We were going to go to Twin Lakes to eat but we couldn't take any more punishment and decided to stop and Grandma's to recover and then head back thru Ontonogon.
#12 for the first 5 miles or so along the road were great, and not just after coming off of the torturous #13 & #3. Thru the woods on the west side was ok, not too bad, a bit rough where the trail dictated our speed and not the other way around. West of Ontonogon was more of the same, not too bad, and we still felt good about our decision to NOT go back on #3 & #13.
#101, we talked to a few guys at that intersection & they said #12 was a mess from White Pine and #1 was just as bad from Bergland. Hence our decision to take 101 back to #13, the good West end.
#13 met the groomer 1/2 mile from the 101 intersection so it was smooth sailing, well almost, back to Bergland. The moguls were so deep that even with 1 pass there moguls did not get filled in especially on many of the corners. Again, we were very glad he was out there but wished he had been there sooner before the trail was obliterated.
#8/#1 was not groomed yet along Bergland so it was another painful trip back thru there.
#8 from Bergland to Wakefield, ditto from earlier in the day with a few more sleds hammering it out.

My attempt at Surgins grading system:
#8 Wakefield to Bergland: C+ (C is average, right?), could have used grooming. Snirt & dirt in corners and the west end where it runs on the road.
#13 to Norwich Road: B+ , snirt in some corners and open sunny spots, moguls in corners, could use grooming (and was as indicated above)
#13 East of Norwich Road: F, Hasn't been groomed in days, moguls that swallowed even the hardiest of riders. Long over-due for grooming.
#3 from Rockland to Mass City, Same as #13 East of Norwich, Travel at your own Risk.
#12 Mass City/Greenland to Ontonogon, A-/B+, see earliar notes for details.
#12 Onotonogan to #101, B+, most of it was good, a little rougher in the tighter woods which is to be expected.
#101, A, very nice, very smooth, wished there were more than only 4 miles of it.
#13 back to Bergland, A-, was being groomed as indicated above but will need another pass at it to remove the moguls.

Again, I call them like I see them and I've been riding here since 1996 putting on a couple thousand miles every season, so I know a good trail from a bad trail.

I've complimented the groomer operators in the past and we've even stopped to 'tip' them some cash so I hope you don't take this report the wrong way. It's intent was to tell it like it is so others can pick and choose their routes with some decent trail-side information.

Surgin,
Sorry to hear about your mechanical issues, thats never any fun to deal with when out of town. Sounds like you guys got some real good riding in though. During the week, best time to ride.

I also agree with you about a short trail to cut across from White Pine to South boundary. Going thru Silver City sucks, the tar, the driveway crossings, no gas, etc.

I like your idea about a simple grading system, let me try to type it up like you did for my trail report for today.

Thanks for the heads-up regarding the sticker check. Been stopped & checked for that up here before, no big deal of course since we always buy them, not trying to be a cheapskate, but I suppose there a quite a few people that are.

I did buy another machine, a 2008 T660 that spent the initial part of its life out in Yellowstone. Ran it about 300 miles so far and so far so good. Need to check the clutch since I think its calibrated for out their at altitude, getting about 3 mpg less that our other 2001 660's. But still looking for the 2007 T660 LE's so keep your eyes open yet.
